Interior Design Trends Inspired by Nature and Circumstance

Of all the lessons learned the past two years, the reality is that homes have taken center stage in our lives. Forced to slow down and spend more time in our home – work, sleep, eat, and socialize – we required everything in our surroundings to serve some sort of purpose whether visual, emotional, and technological.

Design can create an energy within a space that affects our moods and overall health. Interior design trends we’ve seen so far in 2022 reflect an attempt to achieve levels of inner peace in the aesthetics and functionality of space. Use of earth-tone colors and geometric patterns mimic the harmony of nature not only in emerging color palettes but also in nature-inspired surfaces and accents. In other words, the all-white minimal look of the past is now on a warming trend.

Shades of Brown

From gingerbread to caramel and cognac to burnt umber, 2022 is seeing the return of earthy browns that play well with other colors. Stepping away from traditional neutrals, homeowners are starting to experiment with color again staying close to hues found in nature.

Nature-Inspired Surfaces

Spending so much time indoors during the pandemic had the surprising effect of strengthening our connection with nature, which now inspires a resurgence in natural surfaces. The raw, porous, imperfect nature of organic materials – terracotta, marble, and travertine to name a few – adds depth, soul, and visual intrigue.

Upcycling Nature’s Elements

Earthy elements like wood, stone, and clay bring life to a space. Lenton Company recently partnered with Angel City Lumber to accomplish just that turning an industrial space bathroom into a storytelling opportunity with a unique countertop. Creating afterlives from fallen trees throughout Los Angeles, this local milling company is on a mission to ensure the inherent value of our community’s trees live on by creating timeless products from the tumbled neighborhood giants.

Dual-Purpose Rooms

The new normal is for our living spaces to continue to double as work rooms. As people spend more time in their homes, there is an expectation for spaces to work harder. Everything from living space walls lined with wine storage or books to guest rooms fitted with desks, design functionality is increasingly more prevalent.

High-Tech Homes

What can we say? Technology is pervasive in all aspects of our life. Design continues to evolve with every new advance in technology to seamlessly incorporate high-tech to create immersive spaces that are functional yet highly engaging.
