One homeowner was wheelchair-bound, with her partner being the primary caregiver. The existing primary bathroom, despite its size, lacked the space and amenities necessary for wheelchair accessibility. They needed a fully compliant ADA bathroom, prioritizing an accessible toilet and a roll-in shower.
The bathroom was custom-designed to ensure a generous turning radius for a wheelchair throughout. An eclectic look was achieved by blending modern and transitional materials to match the homeowners’ design aesthetic. The overglazed finish on the vanity softened the modern feel of the space, while the playful glass mosaic was carried throughout. Marble-like tile was chosen for the floor and shower wall, providing a timeless feature. A one-piece elongated chair-height Toto toilet with an integrated smart bidet seat was selected, offering full automation and functionality.
The build phase involved demolishing the room down to the studs and removing over half of the concrete slab for the roll-in shower and plumbing relocation. A barrier-free, large shower was constructed, with a digital switch for the shower system placed on a wall common to the bedroom, allowing access for service and reprogramming. Handrails were strategically installed on three sides of the shower, complementing the tile design. For added comfort, a thermal heated floor system was installed under the floor tile, along with a towel warmer outside the shower. A stub wall was built to visually block the accessible toilet from the entry. The new vanity with touchless faucets was designed and built for both accessibility and storage, with plumbing under each sink covered by a privacy panel to allow close access for a wheelchair or walker.
In the words of our homeowners, “The care and concern that each person on the Lenton team exhibited exceeded our expectations and needs. All the planning, measuring, and careful consideration prior to the start of construction was invaluable. We weren’t prepared for all the awesome stuff Lenton Company did for us. I refer them to others because their staff and contractors are so professional and amazing. You get exactly what you pay for with Lenton.” UPDATE: This project won the prestigious NAHB Remodelers ‘Homes for Life’ Award for Bath Remodel.
