When it came time for a beloved family member—a retired educator with a lifelong passion for art—to plan for retirement, she envisioned a home that would allow independence while staying close to those she loved. Years before the term “Accessory Dwelling Unit” was widely used, Lenton Company helped bring that vision to life by creating what was affectionately called a “Granny House” on the family’s property. The challenge was to transform an existing four-car garage with an attached art studio into a comfortable, functional home that reflected the mother and mother-in-law’s artistic spirit while anticipating her long-term accessibility needs.
Collaboration was central to the process, blending family insight with professional design expertise. Together, the team developed a plan perfectly suited to her lifestyle and creative pursuits. She imagined a generous kitchen with a commercial range, plenty of drawers for easy storage, and a large island with an attached desk for art projects and daily tasks. The design strikes a balance between openness and intimacy, with clearly defined spaces for dining, relaxing, and entertaining. The bedroom features built-in cabinetry and a thoughtfully integrated desk, while the bathroom was designed from the start for accessibility. Curved walls, open transitions, and asymmetrical lines lend character and flow—an ideal backdrop for displaying a lifetime collection of artwork and cherished pieces.
The finished home is a lasting expression of thoughtful planning and timeless design. With only two interior doors—one for the closet and another for the bathroom—and wide, barrier-free pathways, the space remains easy to navigate. Low thresholds, a roll-in shower, and generous circulation areas ensure comfort and adaptability as needs evolve. More than twenty years later, the home continues to serve its purpose beautifully, offering independence, safety, and a welcoming space filled with creativity and love. A shared patio connects the ADU to the main residence, providing a favorite spot for family meals, morning coffee, and quiet moments among lush landscaping and colorful potted plants—a perfect balance of connection and individuality.
In the words of Evelyn’s mother and Robert’s mother-in-law, “After nearly 25 years, this home still brings me so much joy. I love its openness and sense of artistry; it’s pleasing to the eye, filled with vibrant color and life. When my son-in-law offered to create this space for me, I knew it would be the perfect arrangement. I cherish the independence my home provides while still being close to family.”
